What is Shared SAN?

Your storage space is set up as a virtual hard disk device and is accessible using the iSCSI protocol. From either Microsoft Windows or most Unix-like operating systems, the space will be presented exactly like a physically-attached hard disk.

iSCSI encapsulates in IP the commands that are used by storage controllers when reading from and writing to hard disk drives. We use Dell EqualLogic servers and at each site our SAN is setup as RAID 6 to protect your data.

How it Works
  • In our Online Remote Disk service, storage is set up as a virtual hard disk device and is accessible using the iSCSI protocol. From either Microsoft Windows or most Unix-like operating systems, the space will be presented exactly like a physically-attached hard disk.
  • This method facilitates the greatest flexibility in the use of your space, allowing you to partition the space and format with whatever file system and associated features are most appropriate to your needs. This is also ideal for long term storage of files that rarely require access such as archived data.
  • Typical use for this would be running a backup or replication application that supports a hard disk as a backup target. Open source backup applications such as Amanda or Bacula, as well as commercial backup applications such as Symantec Backup Exec or Computer Associates ARCserve Backup are examples of such applications that could be used with this.
  • As a storage protocol, iSCSI does not have confidentiality or integrity features, so you are encouraged to implement such mechanisms in your file system or application as appropriate. Through a username and password combination, as well as source address limitations, access to your space is restricted, thereby providing basic protection. If provided over a circuit or leased line, a private VLAN can be provided direct to your storage.

A: A port is recommended if you are using it solely for iSCSI, but this is not a necessity. However, if you choose to go for the port, you then have access to many other services such as IP Transit and Interconnects, with ports starting at 10Mbps.
